What is the service life of my fiberglass shell?
Please refer to Bulletin #9 of 2016
The purpose of Bulletin #9 of 2016, is to bring additional attention to technicians and owners of shells and frames that are older than 25 years old. Shell and frames 25 years or older require increased scrutiny when evaluating for inspection or fiberglass repairs. After 25 years, the fiberglass can lose its integrity, turn brittle, and become difficult or impossible to work with. Attempted repairs to such units will be short-term at best and, worst, inadequate and dangerous. Repairs often will not adhere well to aged, brittle or otherwise compromised fiberglass. The condition of the fiberglass that holds the threaded inserts for the port retainer screws is also an area of special concern. Weakened material here can make proper insert replacement, repairs, or rebuild impossible.
At the very least, these units should be thoroughly inspected at the Kirby Morgan factory or by Dive Lab to determine if they still retain adequate structural integrity. If it is determined the fiberglass is still in working condition, it may still be used.
A shell or frame is not automatically condemned after 25 years but may be condemned upon inspection.
Kirby Morgan cannot overstep policies created by individual dive supervisors or companies.
